Fresh fish FAQs

I am concerned about eating farmed fish. How can I tell if the fish I am purchasing is fresh or farmed?

Many people are concerned about consuming farmed fish. Farmed fish and fresh fish are both sold in stores. To make sure that you are buying fresh fish, be sure to read the packaging and label. It should be clearly stated whether the fish is farmed or fresh.

I live in Maine and I have a family member who lives in Kansas. I would love to send her some fresh lobsters, is this possible?

Lobsters can make great gifts for fish lovers, and sending them across country can be an easy task. In your location you may be able to find a local shop that will ship fresh lobsters for you. If not, try an online store that specializes in fresh seafood. Most stores will ship fish quickly to ensure freshness upon arrival.

I love frozen fish fillets, but I would like to try fresh fillets. I have heard that they are slightly more “fishy” in taste and smell. Is this true?

No, not usually. If you are preparing fresh fish the smell and taste should be delicious. If a fish is too “fishy” smelling it may not be as fresh as you think it is. Be sure that you are working with fresh fillets for optimal taste.
